Water and Irrigation

Water and Irrigation:

Rice crop needs huge amount of water through out the cropping period. So, it is advised to have water level up to 5 cm during the entire period of cropping till milky stage so that weeds can be controlled effectively. Recent study showed that rice crop, however, can also be grown in moist condition and there is no need of continuous submergence. But cracks should not be developed. Stagnating water has adverse effect on tillering and is thus not desirable during tillering phase of crop. Therefore keep less water (2-3cm) initially and then gradually increase its level up to 5-6 cm. Under limited water condition apply water only in critical stages of crop. The most critical stages are: tillering, panicle initiation, heading / flowering and milking.
