Cropping System

Cropping systems

Planting geometry of the crop has been traditionally exploited and/or manipulated to include crops like soybean, pulses, pulse-type beans, and millets as intercrops at different growth stages of maize. Mixed cropping with pulses is advantageous for maintaining soil health and additional crop income. At lower and mid hills, ginger has also been cultivated as an intercrop and this is an important system for Sikkim, despite both the crops being nutrient exhaustive. Keeping this in mind the farmers over a period of time have applied large quantities of FYM that could range anywhere between 5 to 10 to 100 tonnes/ha. Peas and potato are the intercrops in the high hills. Turmeric and Lady’s finger are also grown in the lower and mid hills. Pigeon pea too can be cultivated on the terrace risers with success.

Farmers grow maize an intercrop in Sikkim Mandarin orange. In this case, care should be taken to avoid damage to Mandarin roots at the time of ploughing and earthing up. Following crop rotation is recommended in Sikkim:

Maize – Wheat
Maize – Mustard
Maize – Buckwheat
Maize – Paddy – Potato
Maize – Paddy – Mustard
Maize – Millet
Maize-Urd-Mustard

Mixed cropping:
Maize + Soybean
Maize + Rice beans
Maize + Urd
Maize + Ginger
