Baby Corn

Introduction :

Baby corn is a variety of corn/maize grown extensively for salad making and vegetable soup purpose. The young, finger like ears are harvested when they are fresh just after or before the emergence of silk. The cobs are most delicate, tender, sweet having a pleasant flavor. In countries like Taiwan, Guatemala, China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, U.S.A. baby corn cultivation is successful on commercial scale. In India it is being introduced and becoming popular in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, U.P., Haryana, Maharashtra. Harvesting of the cob is possible within 40-45 days after sowing (DAS) which in turn makes it possible to increase the cropping intensity (about 6-7 crops in a year).

In Sikkim 40.85 thousand ha of land is under maize cultivation. A part of the present maize area may be brought under baby corn cultivation so as to get the maximum benefit and profit. One hectare crop requires investment about Rs.20000 and gives a net profit of Rs.60, 000-80,000.

After harvest of baby corn, the crop provides green, soft, nutritious, succulent and palatable fodder having higher digestibility.
