Varieties

Varieties

The following maize varieties are recommended for commercial cultivation by the Food Security and Agriculture Development Department (FS&ADD), Govt. of Sikkim, Gangtok i.e.

Local varieties:
Garbarey, Pahenli, Khukurey etc.

Hybrid varieties:
Proagro Hybrid – 3485, PAC – 701, Ganga – 11, C – 1415, C – 1837, PAC – 705, etc.

These seeds should never be used for second year as these are made by crossing two inbred lines which may or may not produce even to the extent of local varieties. So seeds should be changed every year.

Composite varieties: Dewki Prabhat, NLD White, VL Makka – 88, Swan composite, Vivek Sankul Makka-11, etc. Among the white kernel varieties NAC 6004, Narmata Moti, Gujarat Makkai 6, NLD White are important. The seeds of composite varieties should be changed after every 2 to 3 years.
