Harvesting

Harvesting:

The crop matures in about 120-135 days depending on the altitude and variety. The earhead do not have synchronous maturity. Therefore, staggered harvesting at weekly interval is recommended. The earheads are harvested with ordinary sickles and straw is cut close to the ground.

Selection of seeds:
Bold and diseases free earheads are collected during the first picking. They are dried and carefully threshed with hand. Either earheads as such or grains are kept for seed purposes.

Yield:
With improved package and practices, it is possible to harvest 20-25 quintals of grains and 60 to 80 quintals of fodder per hectare.

In Sikkim the average yield of finger millet is 762 kg/ha. In West district crop cutting experiments conducted at various places in transplanted crop recorded an average yield of 2200 kg/ha. The yield of high yielding variety VL 101 has been recorded up to 3600 kg/ha at Gyalshing, Heegaon and Darap. The higher yield is due to sufficient rain water harvest in Sikkim condition.
