Varieties

Variety:

In Sikkim the promising local varieties are Nangkatua, Murkey, Phangrey Bhadauray and Pangdur. But now a number of finger millet varieties have been tested for adoption in Sikkim. The high yielding variety (HYV) identified for Sikkim are VL 315, VL 149, PR 202, GPU 48, GPU 45m, Indaf 5, etc.

Crop Improvement:


The crop improvement work has been taken up in India by State Agricultural Universities & ICAR. Many of the improved varieties grown in different states were developed by pureline selection. Hybridization has also been used to develop new varieties.
