Weed management

Weed Management:

Weed generally pose a greater problem in irrigated areas, though barley is a fast growing crop and known to be a good competitor of weeds. The common weeds of barley are:

Common Name Type Scientific Name
Bathua Broad leaf weed Chenopodium album
Hirankhuri Broad leaf weed Convolvulus arvensis
Krishna neel Broad leaf weed Anagalis arvensis
Wild carrot Broad leaf weed Cronopus didymus
Wild oat Narrow leaf weed Avena fatua
Kanki Narrow leaf weed Phalaris minor

Weeding is not usually practiced, unless the soil is very weedy. So, if necessary one hand hoeing after first irrigation is sufficient. The use of weed free seed and a thoroughly prepared land are essential for effective controlling of weeds. The population of weeds depends on the tillage practices followed prior to sowing.
