Varieties

Varieties:

A good crop of Barley could be obtained only by adapting of high yielding and disease resistant varieties. For the first time, Sikkim has introduced some improved varieties of Barley for cultivation to the farmers in 1982. These varieties are discussed below:-

    Himani: It is released by JARI in the year of 1974 for the cultivation at medium to low altitude. It is resistant to yellow rust disease of Barley.
    Dolma: It is released in the year of 1974 to cultivate at medium to high altitude. Its grain is hull-less having high protein. It is resistant to yellow rust disease of Barley.
     VLB-1: It is released in the year of 1984 for the commercial cultivation in the hills. It is a 6-Row type barley with hulled grain. It is resistant to yellow rust and tolerant to stripe disease of Barley.
    Besides this VLB – 5, and H.P. ate also introduced in Sikkim for commercial cultivation of Barley. Following varieties are also suitable for hilly region:-

    Kailash (LBS – 2): It is released in 1971 for successful cultivation of Barley at medium to low elevation. It is good for timely sowing and rainfed condition. It is resistant to yellow rust disease of Barley.
    Sonu (HBL – 87): It is released in 1980. It is quite suitable for lower to medium hills up to 1500 m altitude and late sown condition. It is a 6 – Row type Barley having hulled type grain. It is resistant to yellow rust, powdery mildew disease of Barley and good for forage yield.
    BHS – 46: This variety is released in 1983. It can be successfully cultivated at lower and mid hills up to 2150 m altitude. It is 6 – Row type Barley having hulled type grain. It is resistant to yellow rust, powdery mildew, loose smut disease of barley. It is also non shattering variety which can tolerate the frost.
    BHS – 169: It is released in 1988. it is suitable for medium to high hills under rainfed and timely sown condition. It is a 6 – Row type barley having hulled type grain and resistant to stripe and leaf disease of barley.
    Gopi (HBL–316): It is released in 1993 for hilly areas under rainfed and timely sown condition. It is 6 –Row type barley having hulled type grain. It is resistant to yellow rust, Net Blotch, Powdery mildew and covered Smut disease of Barley.
    HBL – 113: It is released in 1994. It is suitable for timely sown rainfed cultivation of hills. It is a 2 – Row type barley having gulled type grain and resistant to yellow rust, stripe, powdery mildew and smut disease of Barley.
    Harit (HBL – 276: It is released in 1999. It can be cultivate at medium to higher hills under rainfed timely sown condition. It is 6 – Row type barley having hulled type grain. The variety ‘Dolma’ can be replaced by using this one.
    Himadri (BHS – 352): It is released in 2002 for timely sown rainfed condition as well as low fertile soil. It is a 6 – Row type barley having hull-less grain. It takes 173 days for maturity. It is a short night plant and resistant to Net Blotch, Stripe and Yellow rust disease.
    VLB – 56: It is released in 2003 for rainfed timely sown condition. It is 6 – Row type barley having hulled type grain. It takes 156 days for maturity. It is resistant to yellow rust disease of Barley.
