Nutrient Management

Organic nutrient requirement

It is believed that high fertility results in lodging of barley and hence, grown on residual soil fertility. Rainfed crop of barley is seldom manured directly. Very little or no manuring is normally done to coarse cereals including barley. Manure application to barley crop is negligible and its requirement depends upon soil test report, climate and variety of crop. Nitrogen is essential for high yield, particularly on soils with low organic matter content but the excess use of nitrogen causes lodging; increased protein content in the grain adversely affects the malting and brewing quality. Therefore, nitrogen should not be applied during the grain development stage. Experiments suggest that application of organic nutrient sources in furrows one month before sowing instead of sowing time results in higher yields. Application of FYM @ 3-5 t/ha is recommended (Reza, S. K. 2014. Pers. Communication).
