Weed management
This refers to keeping down weed population below economic threshold level for complete elimination of crop weed competition means control of weed in time decrease competition of weed with wheat crop for both soil moisture and plant nutrient. Hoeing or interculture a few days after the first and second irrigation will break the crust and will also remove the weeds. The integrated approach holds good promise which may be obtained by using seed free from weed seeds, proper seed bed preparation, line sowing, manual weeding but if weed population crosses economic thresh hold level use of suitable herbicide should be done. Weed is not a serious problem in wheat cultivation in Sikkim so manual weeding 4- 6 weeks after sowing or whenever required is advocated if necessary. Chemical weed control is not followed in Sikkim and hence mechanical weed control is to be followed.
