Harvesting
Harvesting:
Generally wheat crop is harvested in the month of march- April and extended up to may-June when the grains contain about 10 % moisture and become hard to crush between teeth and during crushing give a clear sound and it turns golden yellow and is completely dry and straw becomes dry and brittle. The harvesting time of crop differ from zone to zone and also depend upon whether it is grown under rainfed and irrigated conditions because the rainfed crop matures much earlier than the irrigated one.
Under Sikkim condition harvesting is generally done manually by using sickles because mechanical harvesting is not possible in the hilly terrain. Mechanical harvesting can be done by using combines which is cost effective as it saves more labour costs. It needs a complete flat land having at least 12 feet breadth for the movement of combine machine. In mechanical harvesting threshing is done along with it.
Yield
The average grain yield of wheat is recorded about 1300 to 1450 kg / ha in Sikkim whereas high yielding variety like Sonalika yielded 3600 kg / ha. This yield can be increased up to 4000 to 6000 kg / ha or more, through systematic implementation of agronomic practices. Usually the straw yield is either equal or one and half times the grain yield.
