Cropping System

Cropping system :

For Sikkim the crop is usually relay cropped with maize. It is grown mostly as rainfed crop and relayed with maize in the drier areas in Sikkim. The later sown crop is the main crop in Sikkim and it is mostly relay cropped with maize.

Crop rotation and Mixed cropping:
Maize - Blackgram
Paddy + Blackgram (only on bunds).

Blackgram being a short duration, short stature and fast growing legume, capable of growing under different seasons, finds place in many inter and sequential cropping systems. It can be grown interchangeably with green gram in most of the cropping systems. Some of the important cropping systems involving blackgram are furnished below:

In sequential cropping:
Blackgram is grown in many cropping sequences in summer and kharif seasons. It is grown in summer under irrigated conditions in intensive agriculture system without wasting the intervening period between two main season crops of kharif and rabi. In areas where there is limited irrigation facility it is grown in kharif either as sole or intercropped with other crops,  followed by rabi crops.

The cropping sequence followed in Sikkim are:

Maize-Blackgram-Mustard
Maize-Blackgram-Potato
Maize-Blackgram-Cole vegetables.
