Harvesting

Harvesting :

Time and method of harvesting depends on the nature of maturity. In varieties exhibiting synchronous maturity, harvesting is should be done by cutting entire plant at ground level when the plants show about 90% maturity. If the variety does not have synchronous maturity pods have to be harvested manually as and when they mature. This is a long and labour-intensive process accounting for 25-30% of the total production cost and 40-50% of the labour cost. Number of pickings and duration of harvest time depends on the variety. Pod picking should be done preferably during morning or evening hours to prevent shattering losses while handling the pods.
