Post Harvesting

Postharvesting :

Always avoid heavy threshing as this gives poor seed quality and also damages the seed coating resulting poor viability. This is important to maintain the quality of seed as well as that of oil and protein. At the same time the capacity to germinate should not hamper. Just after harvesting, the plants should be dried under sun for 2 to 3 days. The threshing is done manually by beating or by mechanical means. For that reason thresher should be kept at 300-400 r.p.m. If the seed moisture content is lesser or more than the requirement the seeds can be broken.

Storage:
The moisture content of the seeds should be less than 10% during storage. Otherwise it may be infected by fungus.
