Water and Irrigation

Water and Irrigation :

Soybean is a Kharif crop grown under rainfed condition in Sikkim. In heavy rainfall; it is necessary to provide proper drainage around the field to drain away the excess rain water to Jhoras or main drainage system. Water stagnation in the field should be avoided.

In the drier areas of the State, water harvesting should be followed to manage water for crop in time. Rain water is the nature’s precious gift; collect it and conserve. For this purpose, channels or furrows are prepared around the field. A water harvesting structure should be constructed in each field for conserving drainage water and using it at the time of need. The field should be free from weeds. The channels prepared through up of the crop in lines should be obstructed at certain for impounding rain water in furrows.

Soybean plants indicate requirement of water if leaf drooping starts even in the early hours (9.00 am). In that case, it is necessary to the crop.

  • Irrigation channels are to be prepared after sowing the crop. If there is no rain during flowering or grain filling stage, irrigation must be given. The irrigation during these stages increases yield by one and half times. If irrigation is not given then the yield reduces drastically.
  • By sprinkler irrigation more area can be covered with lesser amount of water in a short time. By this method water can be used proficiently. About 70% water can be saved by this method and this can be utilized for other crop too.
