Weed Management

Weed management :

In case of ‘toria’ early mustard it is observed that late kharif season weeds viz. Trianthema spp., etc. are found while the main crop is infested with Chenopodium spp., Anagallis spp., Spergula arvensis, Asphodelus spp., etc. Orabanche, a phanerogamic parasite, has been found to be a very serious weed in the crop. The chemical control of these weeds is not allowed in Sikkim, hence manual weeding once about 25-30 days after sowing has been found to check the weed competition and yield is not reduced. An effective control of Orobanche may be achieved by their hand pulling and growing mustard after 2-3 years. The crop suffers severe weed competition in initial stages and the reduction in yield may very from 20-70%. The rainfed crop should be hand-weeded once 20-25 DAS where as the irrigated crop should be hand-weeded twice at 20 DAS and45 DAS.
