Weed Management

Weed management:

Among the insect pests that attack large cardamom, leaf caterpillar (Artona chorista Jordon) and stem borer (Glyphipterix sp.) are considered as important pests of the crop. Aphids are responsible for transmitting viral diseases viz., chirke and foorkey. White grub is also becoming an important pest and need attention for their control.

Leaf caterpillar (Artona chorista Jordon)

Initially, the caterpillar of the moth feeds on the leaf lamina from under surface of the leaf and finally defoliates the leaves completely leaving only the midribs. Their incidence is noticed in May - July and October - March. For effective management of this pest, infested leaves with caterpillar may be collected and burnt regularly. This method is effective because,

  1. Caterpillars remain in congregation in clusters, so large numbers .of caterpillars can be collected from a single colony.
  2. Infested leaves can be identified easily by their transparent epidermis.
  3. Caterpillars are sluggish in nature.

Stem Borer (Glyphipterix sp.)
The larvae bore into the pseudo stem above collar region and feed on the central part of pseudostem causing dead heart. Sometimes, frass materials (excreta) can be seen near the holes at basal region of pseudo stem. Phyto-sanitation" removal and burning of infested tillers is helping for managing the pests.
Points to be considered for pest management

  1. Do not apply chemicals (especially in cocktails and repeatedly).
  2. Give emphasis on phytosanitation.
  3. Pest infested plants / plant parts should be destroyed immediately, otherwise it acts as breeding ground.
  4. Do not use infested planting materials for new plantation.
  5. All management measures should be adopted on community basis for better result.
  6. Never do harm bumble bees, wild bees or honey bees, as they are the pollinators.
