Cropping System

Cropping systems

Chilli should be in rotation with other vegetables and field crops, but care should be taken to avoid rotation with other solanaceous crops. Brinjal should not be cultivated in succession with chilli. Since the pests and diseases are common to chilli, brinjal and potato, it is not advisable to include them in a rotation. The irrigated chilli crop is sometimes grown mixed with millets, groundnut, cotton, ginger or vegetables. As a garden crop in northern India, it is sometimes allowed to grow as a stand-over crop for one or two seasons. Chilli raised in February for green pods can be rotated with other winter crops like cauliflower, peas and root crops or can be rationed to get red chillies in winter. It can also be intercropped with cucurbits, onion, okra, etc.

Cherry pepper grown in Sikkim is of perennial nature therefore, intercrop of millet, groundnut, ginger and vegetables can be taken. Crop rotation with solanaceous vegetables should be avoided.
