Nutrient Management

Organic nutrient management
The site selected for planting chilli should be rich in organic matter. Green manuring can be done in the area of assured rainfall. In general, chilli responds well to the application of fertilizer in both, irrigated and rainfed areas. Sub-optimal levels of major nutrients often lead to deficiency symptoms in chilli. In deficiency of N, plants become stunted with pale-green leaves. Older leaves become smaller and uniformly pale-green. In severe cases, leaves are bleached from margins inwards until finally the entire leaf is bleached to pale-white. Variety, type of soil, irrigation facilities are the factors that govern the quantity of manure and fertilizers to be applied. Since chilli has a long growing season, application of 20 to 25 tonnes FYM/ha and/or vermicompost @ 1.5 to 3.0 t/ha alone or incombination with FYM and neem cake @ 200 g/sq m is recommended during field preparation (Reza, S. K. 2014.Pers. Communication). At the time of planting roots of seedlings should be dipped in Azospirillum + PSB culture(2.0 per cent) for 15 minutes. The addition of vermicompost @ 1 kg/sq m one month after planting improves growth and production of chilli.
