Field Preparation and Sowing

Field Preparation and Sowing

Generally 2-3 ploughing is done or land is dug 2-3 times and a fine bed is prepared before sowing. Beds of about 75-100 cm in width and raised about 15-20cm with a spacing of 30-45cm are taken for sowing. Raised beds with a gentle outward slope avoid water logging in ginger field.

Manuring:
Manuring is done at the time of land preparation or at the time of planting Normally 40-60 tonnes of cowdung (Dry matter 27-40%) or compost per ha is mixed in soil before sowing. Heavy manuring (up to 200 tonnes/ha) in ginger field is a common practice. In general, Sikkim farmers do not use any fertilizer in ginger field.
