Water and Irrigation

Water and Irrigation

The irrigated crop is watered immediately after sowing. The beds of the rain-fed crop are mulched with leaf as protection against sun and heavy rains, conservation of soil moisture, suppression of weed growth and for the consequent enhancement of organic matter in the soil. In Himachal Pradesh, FYM is used as mulch. Seeds of cluster-bean, pigeon-pea or castor are sown on irrigation channels on the corners of the raised beds for shade. The shoots emerge in 10-20 days. Irrigation is given at varying intervals of 4-10 days as and when required.

Light irrigation is given 5-6 days before harvesting for easy harvesting and to avoid breakage of rhizome
