Seed Testing
Seed Testing
Seed testing is aimed to obtain accurate result pertaining to the planting value of seed lots. Evaluation of seed quality is done in the seed testing laboratories and they play a pivotal role in seed certification.
SEED SAMPLES
There are three types of seed samples to be submitted to seed testing laboratory for analysis.
- Service sample: Service sample are those sample which are submitted by cultivators, seeds men, private seed farms and any progressive and interested farmers. They have no official status but must be tested promptly to provide the sender with immediate information about the quality of seed.
- Certificate sample: The samples submitted by a seed certification officer or Inspector are certified samples. These samples and lot of seed from which the sample was collected are supposed to posses satisfactory germination and purity.
- Official sample: Official sample are those drawn by a seed control or seed law enforcement officer. These are submitted to the laboratory to determine if a seed lot being offered for sale meets the requirement of seed act.
SEED SAMPLING
Before sending to the seed testing laboratory seed should be sampled properly by an experienced person. Seed sampling is aimed at obtaining a sample of the required size and consisting of the same components as the whole lot of seed.
Method of sampling: A sample from a seed oil is obtained by taking small portion at random from different portion in the lot which is called primary samples. Generally the primary samples are drawn with the help of seed triers or by hand in case of chaff/non-free flowing seed. After the collection of primary samples, all the collected samples should be mixed and combining them which is called Composite sample. From this composite sample, sub-samples are obtained by one or more stages. The sampler mist samples the minimum requisite nos. Of bags from the seed lot. The intensity of the sampling are as follows :
Seed lot in bags (Any other container of uniform size)
The following sampling intensity is regarded as the minimum requirement :
|
Up to 5 containers |
|
Sample each container and always take at least five primary samples. |
|
6-30 containers |
|
Sample five containers or at least one in every five containers, whichever is greater. |
|
31-400 containers |
|
Sample 10 containers or at least one in every seven containers whichever is greater. |
|
401 or more containers |
Sample 80 containers or at least one in every seven containers, whichever is greater. |
