Land preparation/ tillage operation
Land preparation/ tillage operation
The tillage operations, defined as mechanical manipulation of soil, are performed to achieve the desired seedbed to provide optimum environment for seed germination and plant growth. Seedbed preparation for sowing/planting of different crops is done through primary and secondary tillage operations.
All the land preparation operations like ploughing, clod crushing done by local infigenous implements like Halo.
- Power Tillers have been effective in few pockets with relatively big areas with wide terraces.
- Power Tillers not effective in areas with narrow terraces due to weight factor.
- Difficult to find a relatively large pocket of land suitable for power tillers so that its use would be economically viable
- Due to Strict Forest regulations, Iron Plough can be an viable alternative.
- (a) POWER TILLER:
A small 2 wheeled 7.5HP petrol run tractor it is suitable for operation in the valleys of the state and in the broad terraces as well. With provisions for attachment of Mould board plough and Rotavators, it is useful for ploughing and clod crushing. With a weight of around 180 Kgs, it can be used in gently sloping lands. It can cover 1 hac in about 25 hours compared to 80 hours by bullocks.

(b) IRON PLOUGH :
It is an animal drawn plough made up of Mild Steel.The operation of this plough similar to other traditional wooden plough. And the depth of ploughing can be adjusted. It can be used with the normal wooden beam by fixing two U-bolts. It is a viable alternative to the traditional wooden plough in this time of scarcity of timber.
