Sowing and Planting
Sowing and Planting
The basic objective of sowing operation is to put the seed and fertilizer in rows at desired depth and seed to seed spacing, cover the seeds with soil and provide proper compaction over the seed. The recommended row to row spacing, seed rate, seed to seed spacing and depth of seed placement vary from crop to crop and for different agro-climatic conditions to achieve optimum yields.
Traditional sowing methods include broadcasting manually, opening furrows by a country plough and dropping seeds by hand in the furrow. Traditional sowing methods have following limitations;
- non-uniform distribution of seeds
- Higher seed rates
- Row to row & plant to plant spacing not maintained, hence difficulty in using mechanical means for other operation.
- High labour requirement
Power operated sowing/ planting equipments cannot be used in our local conditions,as also the bullock drawn seed drills have their limitations. There are some manual sowing equipments which needs to be tried in our local conditions and the Engineering Cell is in the process of trials of such implements.
(i) ADJUSTABLE ROW MARKER :
This is a device to mark rows on seed bed for maintaining row to row distance while using single row seedling devices. It has three markers fitted on a sliding bar and the distance between any two markers can be adjusted according to row to row spacing requirement of the crop
Adjustable Row Maker Naveen Dibler
(ii) NAVEEN DIBBLER :
It is a manually operated equipment for dibbling broad or medium seeds in row or gap filling into well prepared soil. It is suitable for drilling soyabean and maize for gap filling purpose. It consists of row type seed placement device, cell type metering mechanism, lever type power transmission system for roller and jaws, seed box with delivery system. Weight is 4 kgs,&capacity is 0.028 hs/hr
(iii) ROTARY DIBBLER :
It is a manually operated push type equipment for dibbling bold and medium size seeds in rows at uniform spacing in well prepared soil. Suitable for crops like maize, soyabean, pigeon pea and black gram.

Rotary Dibbler Manual Seed/Ferti Drill Manual Seed Drill
(iv) MANUAL SEED & FERTILIZER DRILL:
It is single row manually operated equipment for drilling seed and fertilizer by using fluted roller. It is suitable for drilling seeds of soybean, mustard, wheat etc. It consists of handle, frame, hopper with seed and fertilizer chamber, metering roller, shoe type furrow opener, ground drive wheel etc. It weighs 17 Kgs & its field capacity is 0.05 hac/hr.
