Processing & Value Addition Equipments
Majority in Sikkim are marginal land holders and only a few amongst the large land holders cultivate their land. The farmers grow a bit of everything in their limited land and since the produces are generally low in volume, marketing also is a problem.
Theres no major Processing facility in the state. Majority in Sikkim are marginal land holders and only a few amongst the large land holders cultivate their land. Hence we can say that almost all are marginal & medium land holders. The farmers grow a bit of everything in their limited land and since the produces are generally low in volume, marketing also is a problem.
Villages in Sikkim and households within the villages are scattered and processing industries in the villages are non existent. Whatever the farmer produces are sold to the merchants in towns. The traditional processing tools like Dhiki for rice hauling, Janto for grinding and Pecha for oil expelling too are non existent now. Even for household consumption, the farmers take their produces to the towns for processing like rice hauling, grinding, oil expelling etc. and carry them back, thereby increasing the unit cost. If they could process these products in the village itself, it would reduce the unit cost of these consumable items and it would also fetch a better price for them if they could sell the processed and packaged items instead of raw items.
Hence the Department has been concentrating more on On Farm, Processing of agricultural products. The department has been providing these small sized machineries like Rice Hullers, Grinders etc on subsidy to the farmers. Also, Agro Service Units are being set up by the Department in the Government farms and by the Individuals consisting of Rice Huller, Oil Expeller and Grinder on subsidy basis. Since last year, the Department has also been providing a Diesel Gen. Set along with these machineries so that they can be set up in areas where three phase electricity is unavailable..
Setting up of Agro-Service Centre in rural areas can benefit the farmers a lot. With the location of these agro-service centres in selected pockets far away from towns, the farmers can process their products within the village thereby increasing their income. And more emphasis is being given to “ON FARM PROCESSING”, whereby small & low cost processing machineries like multi purpose grinders, oil expellers etc. run on single phase electricity are installed in farm levels and the processed products are marketed. These post harvest equipments and value addition machinery are gaining more popularity among the farming community as this can generate income to the farmers
(i) AGRO SERVICE CENTRES:
Setting up Agro Service Centres consisting of Rice Huller, Grinder & Oil expeller in interior areas is opening up self employment and income generation. In addition, it also serves the rural populace of the sorrounding villages whereby they don’t need to carry their produces to the Cities for processing.

(ii)MULTIPURPOSE GRINDER :
Run on 1.0 Hp single phase electric motor, this can grind cereals, dhania, pulses etc. The degree of coarseness can be controlled.
•Wt. 70 kgs
•Power consumption : 1 KWH
•Capacity : cereals- 11-20 Kgs/hr
Dhania – 10 kgs/hr
Dal - 50-70 Kgs/ hr

(iii) DOMESTIC FLOOR MILL:
Run on 1Hp single phase electric motor, this atta chakki for domestic purpose is a very handy device for grinding of wheat, maize, rice etc to different degree of coarsness. Its capacity ranges from 5 to 10 Kgs per hour
(iv) SPICES GRINDER:
Used for grinding of spices like Turmeric, Jeera, Dhania etc. this also is a single phase electric run machine.
- Wt. 50 Kgs
- Power consumption : 1KWH
- Capacity : 10 to 20 Kgs / hr

Pulveriser Grinder Potato Peeler (Power driven)
(vi) POWER OPERATED POTATO PEELER:
It is a single phase electric run machine for peeling potatoes. The peeling is uniform, with very little wastage. The machine weight is 60 Kgs and it can peel 5 Kgs potatoes in 3 minutes.
(vii) POWER OPERATED VEGETABLE SLICER :
Single phase electric run machine for slicing of potatoes, carrots, Radish, Onions etc. It slices to a thickness of of 3 to 5 mm and can slice along the cross-section or along the length(upto 4.5 inches)

(viii) MANUAL POTATO PEELER :
It is abatch type hand operated equipment for peeling outer skin of potatoes for further processing. A batch of 8-10 kgs potatoes of uniform size is fed in the drum and rotated. The peeling is complete in about 8-10 minutes. It weighs 25 Kgs.
(ix) FRUIT JUICER :
For extracting juice from the fruits like mousambhi, orange, pine apples etc. it is a single phase electric run machine. The clear juice is collected at one end and the pulp & the seeds are collected from another end.
