Sprinkler Irrigation System
PROVIDING SPRINKLER IRRIGATION SYSTEM AT AMBEYTAR, THARPU W.SIKKIM.
The steep hill slopes of Sikkim , especially West and South of Sikkim has high rainfall concentration, in particular season with low rainfall during winter season posses a multi prolonged problems for the farmers of the hilly region. The steep slopes and rainfall concentration for three to four months leads to scarcity of water during off seasons, resulting in mono-cropping or low yield due to water stress situation in crops grown on sloppy land. The use of Tank irrigation systems helps in conservation and efficient utilization of available water during lean season. The know how regarding their use and benefits needs to be propagated.
Sprinkler irrigation is an irrigation system that sprinkles water in manner similar to rainfall. Thus to mitigate the above problem, what ever irrigation water that is to be tapped during winters is through small streams and rivers by way of diversion drains and to store it in a 49,000 ltrs GENAP water tank and supply it through network of pipes, called mains and laterals under high pressure and is forced through nozzles of small diameter.
The project sprinkler irrigation at Ambeytar, Tharpu, west Sikkim, Which has relatively flat area of paddy field of about 45 lac, covers aprox 40 households. The cropping pattern in this area shows paddy as the main summer crop and wheat and mustard as Rabi crops. This will immensely benefit the farmers of Tharpu, Ambeytar in W. Sikkim which faces severe drought due to the absence of any proper streams and rivulets. The water will be harvested from any local perennial source available in the village and stored in a tank and will be taken to the fields through the HDPE pipes in the crops roots zone and water as per the requirement will be released to the plant thereby reducing any chances of loses. Thus with limited water huge tracts of land can be covered.
SPECIFICATIONS OF GENAP WATER TANK:
- Corrugated steel plate: standard zinc plated high strength steel of International standards.
- Tank Liners made of High quality PVC Film with extra UV stabilized Chemical resistant.
- Tank Liners made Aquatex Ex-high quality polyolefine plastic film.
- Expected life of GENAP under normal conditions is 5-25 yrs.
- Fitted with nut bolts and can be dismantled and refixed in another location as per requirement.
- This scheme is a combination of a water storage & supply with Sprinkler Irrigation System in Open field crops viz. Wheat & Mustard.
